Winter Count of Good Voice Hawk, 1822-1912
This document is a page from a transcribed winter count history given in 1912 by Yanktonai Sioux (Dakota) historian Good Voice Hawk, through interpreter Ben Harrison. The history is a chronicle of the events of each year between 1822 and 1912. Winter counts were normally painted on hides or cloth. The keeper would paint a picture to represent the significant event of each winter. Oftentimes the job of keeping the winter count was passed down from father to son in the same family.
