MPEG-1 Program Stream is a file that has been combined with Packetized Elementary Streams (PES) into a single stream; it can be used for transport, as in the case of DVDs. MPEG-1 was released in 1993, with subsequent versions being released over the next several years; the MPEG family now has over 15 versions. MPEG is an open standard, is still supported by the Moving Picture Experts Group, is widely used in the community, and has open source tools available for transcoding. If MPEG is used for reformatting, 8-bit video is acceptable but 10-bit is preferred. It is recommended to retain MPEG-1 Program Stream files as-is since the files can easily be opened and are prevalent in the field." ;
