David Lawrence Gregg (1819-1868) served as United States minister to Hawaii from 1853 to 1856. The diaries discuss Gregg鈥檚 thoughts on the annexation of the islands to the United States, ministerial matters, missionaries, merchants, the Hawaiian royal family, and other government business. In 1857, he left the office to become Hawaiian finance minister. Gregg returned to the United States, settling in听Carson City, Nevada. His diaries constitute one of the most valuable accounts for this era in Hawaii.
