The 威尼斯人娱乐场 presents afternoon programs in March on topics ranging from the SS Titanic to the OSS and code breaking. These events are free and open to the public and will be held in the William G. McGowan Theater of the 威尼斯人娱乐场 Building in Washington, DC, which is located on the National Mall and is fully accessible. Attendees should use the Special Events entrance on Constitution Avenue at 7th Street, NW.
BOOK TALK: Wild Bill Donovan: The Spymaster Who Created the OSS and Modern American Espionage
Wednesday, March 7, at noon, William G. McGowan Theater
鈥淲ild Bill鈥 Donovan was director of the Office of Strategic Services during World War II and the father of today鈥檚 CIA. Douglas Waller has mined government and private archives throughout the United States and England, drawing on recently declassified documents and interviews with scores of Donovan鈥檚 relatives, friends, and associates, to produce a biography of one of the most powerful men in modern espionage. Elliot Carlson鈥檚 biography of Captain Joe Rochefort, Joe Rochefort鈥檚 War: The Odyssey of the Codebreaker Who Outwitted Yamamoto at Midway, is the first book written about the officer who headed the U.S. Navy鈥檚 decrypt unit at Pearl Harbor and broke the Japanese Navy鈥檚 code before the Battle of Midway. Samuel Halpern discusses a modern-day report on the loss of the Titanic. This ultimate Titanic reference book looks into the American and British inquiries, the passengers and crew, the ice warnings received, the damage and sinking, process of rescue, and the aftermath. Presented in connection with a special 威尼斯人娱乐场 Featured Document Display on the Titanic March 19鈥揂pril 23.
