En 1941, el Servicio de Parques Nacionales asign贸 al destacado fot贸grafo Ansel Adams para que creara un mural fotogr谩fico para el Departamento del Interior en Washington, DC. El tema deb铆a  ser la naturaleza,  ejemplificada y protegida en los Parques Nacionales de EE. UU. El proyecto del mural se detuvo debido a la Segunda Guerra Mundial y nunca se reanud贸, sin embargo, las fotograf铆as permanecieron.

Mucho m谩s tarde, en 1962, las fotograf铆as se incorporaron a las existencias de la Rama de Im谩genes Fijas de la Administraci贸n Nacional de Archivos y Registros. Las impresiones originales creadas para el proyecto ahora se encuentran dentro de la serie 79-AA: Fotograf铆as de parques y monumentos nacionales de Ansel Adams, 1941-1942, mientras que los negativos fueron retenidos originalmente por Adams en ese momento. Ansel Adams visitar铆a m谩s tarde la Rama de Imagenes Fijas y revisar铆a sus impresiones fotogr谩ficas en 1979.

Otras fotograf铆as fueron tomadas en la Presa de Boulder; Acoma Pueblo, Nuevo M茅xico; San Idelfonso, NM; Taos Pueblo, Nuevo M茅xico; Tuba City, AZ; Walpi, AZ; y Owens Valley, CA. Muchos de los 煤ltimos lugares muestran a los indios pueblo y navajo, sus hogares y actividades.

Las fotograf铆as de Kings Canyon se tomaron en 1936 cuando se propon铆a el establecimiento del parque. Adams agreg贸 estas impresiones al proyecto del mural. La 煤nica fotograf铆a de Yosemite (79-AAU-1) fue un regalo de Adams al jefe del Servicio de Parques, Horace Albright, en 1933.

Adem谩s, hay ocho fotograf铆as tomadas por Adams de Yosemite en los Archivos Fotogr谩ficos Generales del Servicio de Parques Nacionales (79-G). Aunque la mayor铆a de las fotograf铆as de Adams en las existencias de la Rama de Im谩genes Fijas de la Administraci贸n Nacional de Archivos y Registros son de dominio p煤blico, estas fotograf铆as espec铆ficas probablemente siguen bajo protecci贸n de derechos del Autor.
